Prof. Keming Qian Visiting IRRI and ISNAR Asian Office
Prof. Keming Qian , director general of IAE, visited IRRI and ISNAR Asian office at the Philippines on July, 9th-16th. Prof. Qian discussed the future cooperation with IRRI directors, economists from Social Science Division, and members from ISNAR Asian office. In the in-depth discussion, Prof. Qian pointed out, rice is the staple crop of Asean, and also the major trade product in Asean 10 plus3 regions, however, this issue didn't receive enough recognition in the WTO negotiation. Prof.Kemin Qian g proposed to learn from coffee producer organizations of Latin America on producer protection, and suggested to set up Asian Network on Rice Economy Research by IRRI and IAE, and establish concerned database, to study deeply the emerging issues and challenges in rice production, supply and international trade. This proposal received positive response from IRRI.
