Workshop on China Rice: Production, Circulation and Competitiveness held in IAE on March 19, 2003
Workshop on China Rice: Production, Circulation and Competitiveness was co-organized by IAE and JIRCAS on March 19, 2003. The workshop aimed to analysis those rural survey data of the recent 3 years, and bring up in-depth discussion focusing on technology progress and industrialized operating condition of rice production. Participants to the workshop are experts and scholars came from the following units: Department of International Cooperation of MOA, MOA Information Center, National Agricultural Technology Extend Center, Central Policy Research Department, Dept. of Scientific and Technical Management of CAAS, Dept. of International Cooperation of CAAS, Research Center for Farms and Land Reclamation Economics of MOA, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China Agricultural University, China Renmin University, Nankai University, State Committee of Planning and Development, Institute of Natural Resources and Regional Planning of MOA, Japan Embassy in Beijing, JIRCAS, Japan Meiji University etc. There were also researchers from IAE. The workshop was preside by Prof. Lubiao Zhang, vice DG of IAE, Mr. Zhongwei Liu, official from MOA, delivered opening address, representatives from Japan Embassy, on behalf of Japan Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, also addressed during the opening ceremony. Four experts from China and Japan gave four research reports concentrated on production, processing, circulation, industrialized operating status and development trend of China rice, China's food policy. Participants carried out heated and deep discussion. This shows that China's agro economists and related government officials as well as Japanese agro economists attach great importance on China's rice production and related industry development. This workshop successfully furthered understandings toward the international competitiveness of China rice, and established foundations for future study of rice production and industrialization, and improvement of China rice's competitive power. At the same time, the workshop further promotes Sino-Japan agricultural cooperation and exchange. JIRCAS project officer summarized the workshop and granted high appraisal to the successful workshop.
